SUKHOTHAI, THAIALND
Seven hundred years ago, Sukhothai was
the capital of Thailand's first Kingdom,
and lay at the heart of Thai civilization's
Golden Age. By the end of the 14th century,
the city had been abandoned, and gradually
fell into ruin. In 1978, the largest and
most complex restoration effort in Thai
history was undertaken, and Sukhothai
is now a major tourist destination.
